Once limited to roving ice cream vendors, mobile canteens that called on construction sites or hot dog and popcorn sellers at fairs, today’s food trucks and trailers have gone upscale. They’ve also climbed in popularity.
Entrepreneur Roy Choi of Los Angeles is credited by industry sources with starting the trend in 2008 with one of America’s first gourmet food trucks. Offering delicious and innovative cuisine, it proved to be a huge hit. His operation quickly expanded to four additional food trucks.
Of course, others soon took note. Food trucks have become one of the hottest trends in the restaurant business. Now craft brewers are entering the industry by operating trucks and trailers with taps that dispense their latest beers and ales.
Today, there are over 4,000 food trucks across the U.S. that collectively are enjoying considerable success. According to research firm IBISWorld, food truck industry revenue grew at an annual rate of 7.9 percent from 2011 to 2016.
Another measure of their success? The growing popularity of food truck rallies. Also termed food truck festivals, food truck rodeos or food truck gatherings, these are events where as many as 100 or more food trucks gather in a single location where they draw thousands of hungry and thirsty fans!
