Experiential Graphic Design for Pediatric Environments | St. Luke’s Family Play Farm

Let's Start A Conversation:

A complete environmental transformation: integrating 2D wall murals with 3D fabricated elements to create an immersive "Play Farm."

+Beyond the Mural: Defining Experiential Design in 2016

Long before "Experiential Graphic Design (EGD)" became a standard term in Eastern PA, Signs By Tomorrow Allentown was pushing the boundaries of what a "sign shop" could provide. In 2016, St. Luke’s approached us with a challenge: transform a sterile, empty waiting area into a vibrant "Family Play Farm" that honored their partnership with the Rodale Institute Organic Farm. We didn't just suggest a wall wrap; we co-created a cohesive environment. By blending floor-to-ceiling murals with the existing green flooring and extending the patterns across adjacent protective wall coverings, we blurred the lines between the architecture and the artwork.

+Problem-Solving Through Fabrication: The "Barn Silo" Transformation

True expertise is revealed when faced with functional obstacles. The play area required a large, black TV and bookshelf unit that threatened to disrupt the visual flow of the farm theme. Rather than working around it, I proposed a custom fabrication solution: we engineered and formed a faux barn roof to cap the unit, instantly turning a piece of utilitarian furniture into a 3D barn that melted into the mural. To anchor the experience, we introduced "Sprout"—a custom-designed character featuring the iconic St. Luke’s star on his overalls. This level of creative integration—fabricating 3D elements to complement 2D graphics—is what separates a legacy consultant from a standard print vendor.

+A Decade of Durability: From Industrial Mines to Healing Spaces

Our authority in high-stakes graphics didn't start in the playroom; it started in the weeds. As early as 2013, we were already engineering safety wraps for cargo containers at concrete mine facilities—environments where graphics must withstand extreme abrasion and UV exposure. This deep-rooted technical history is why our healthcare installations, like the St. Luke’s Family Play Farm, remain the gold standard in Eastern PA. While newer competitors are still learning the basics of substrate adhesion, we have spent over a decade perfecting the "Design-Build" model for pediatric environments, ensuring every installation is as durable as it is engaging.
